What local-first means
A local-first app lets the main experience work on your device before it depends on a remote account. For a memory practice, that means you can begin with a verse library and review loop without handing over an email address just to see whether the method fits.
It is not a promise that every feature is offline forever. It is a decision about the default: the useful part starts close to you, with fewer prerequisites.
What stays local by default
Verse stores the core verse library, settings, and review history in your browser’s local storage for the device you are using. The landing page can be opened without an account, and the practice can begin before cloud sync is enabled.
That also means you should understand the tradeoff: clearing browser data or moving to a different device can affect local progress. A private default is useful, but it is not the same as an automatic backup.
- Use the same browser when you want the same local library.
- Keep the app’s export option in mind as your library grows.
- Choose sync when continuity across devices matters more than a local-only default.
What optional sync adds
When you sign in and choose to sync, Verse can associate your practice with your account so it can be available across supported devices. The decision happens after you have seen the product and decided that continuity is worth it.
Cloud sync is an addition to the practice, not a requirement for the first session. Read the product’s privacy and terms pages before enabling any account feature, especially if you are using a shared device.
Choose the tradeoff deliberately
Local-first is not automatically better for every person. A family sharing one library or someone who changes devices often may value account sync. Someone testing a small private practice may prefer to begin with no account and no setup.
The important thing is that the product tells you which mode you are in. Privacy should be a visible choice, not a hidden implementation detail.
Start privately
Try the core loop before you create an account.
Open the practice, choose a starter pack, and decide later whether sync is useful.
